This conversation is being had more and more commonly within organisations that use or need apps to communicate with their customers and /or staff.
Dozens of new touch devices such as phones, tablets and e-readers are being released every year, which for native apps (apps that only run on a particular operating system such iOS or Android) often means at best, a new version to release (and get approval in the case of Apple) and, at worst, means a complete re-write.
Even if you decide to restrict your user base to one platform, such as iOS there are still several resolutions, different hardware capabilities and other idiosyncrasies that will require several different versions of the app. This means more code, more repetition and more cost.
Restricting apps to a single ecosystem such as iOS or Android rarely makes business sense – in the case of sales & marketing apps it’s incredibly dangerous as you potentially isolate yourself from prospective customers. So to keep up, every time a new device is launched and gains any traction, suddenly a new app needs to be developed or you miss out. Sound familiar?

Apps can either be packaged up and sold in the various app stores or they can run straight from a link from your website. The real power of this approach is that not only do you only need to write the app once to run on any device, but you can push updates and changes to the app without the (sometimes considerable) delay of waiting for app store approval.
What’s more this also gives you far greater potential for dictating your revenue streams as you are not restricted to Apple’s payment structure (and you won’t have to give them a cut either).
Want to break the shackles of native development and take back control? Let’s talk.
